Hillbilly Recordings is not a typical record label, but a dedicated bluegrass archive that aims to preserve these transient sounds and stories for the future.

Glen Lasley and The Hillbilly Recordings project is driven by the philosophy that memories and oral stories fade over time, but audio recordings will live on for many years and retain the exact sound of the past. My process involves:

Field Recordings: Capturing live, unedited performances and environmental sounds.
Archival Focus: Cataloging recordings by time, date, place, and gathering all available information from the people involved.
Limited Sharing: I generally don't share my recorded music publicly, emphasizing the archival nature of my work. Most all my recordings are the only copies in the world.
Podcast Presence: While most recordings are private, I have released some of my archives through a podcast format on platforms like Podbean and Amazon Music, featuring artists like The Millcreek Boys and the Cali Cut-ups.

The name \"Hillbilly Recordings\" uses the historical term, which was an industry label for early country and Appalachian music in the 1920s and '30s, and later evolved into \"Country and Western\". my use of the term is in the context of this traditional American roots music.

The Bluegrass Archive

The archive I am creating is a vital effort to preserve this musical heritage. Capturing authentic, unvarnished sounds of bluegrass music as it is performed in real time. This type of field recording and diligent archiving serves a crucial role in music history, providing a true sonic snapshot of the culture and performance style of the era, which often differs from polished studio recordings. My efforts will ensure that the specific nuances, energy, and stories of the musicians I record are not lost to time.
